About the Instructor

Meet Professor Sergio Esquivel

BJJ Black Belt · Marine Corps Veteran · Lifelong Martial Arts Instructor

Professor Sergio began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2005 under BJJ Revolution Team while serving in the United States Marine Corps. As a certified Martial Arts Instructor Trainer, he has taught and mentored hundreds of Marines in combat-tested self-defense and close-quarters systems—both on base and during deployments.

After training across the U.S. and abroad, competing in Japan, and earning his BJJ black belt, he founded Sugoi Submissions to bring world-class jiu-jitsu back home to Corpus Christi.

His approach blends Marine Corps-level structure with a family-first culture, helping students of all ages develop real skill, confidence, and resilience—on and off the mats.

Our Method & Lineage

What Is the Carlson Gracie Lineage Method?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a martial art. It’s a system passed down from teacher to student—refined over decades and tested at every level.

Sugoi Submissions teaches through the Carlson Gracie lineage, one of the most respected schools in the history of the art. We are an official affiliate of BJJ Revolution Team, founded by Professors Rodrigo Medeiros and Julio “Foca” Fernandez—both direct black belts under Master Carlson Gracie.

This method is known for:

Strong fundamentals that work in both self-defense and competition

Pressure-based techniques built for real-world application

A team-first training culture rooted in accountability and respect

We carry that tradition forward in every class we teach.
